Narrative

Joseph C. Freeby was born in Illinois in about 1841. His father was born in Pennsylvania, and his mother was born in Pennsylvania or New York (he gave different information for the census over the years, for PA, then later NY).

Peter Freeby was born in Illinois in about 1844. His father was born in Pennsylvania, and his mother in Massachusetts (which may or may not be correct).

=> 1860

Peter and a "Jos" both lived with a family in Cuyahoga Falls, Summit, Ohio in 1860:
Name Age
Cornelia Miller 46 (born in New York, about 1814)
Eliz Thompson 26 (born in Connecticut, about 1834)
Jos Frieby 19 (born in Illinois, about 1841)
Peter Frieby 16 (born in Illinois, about 1844)
Harriet Miller 10 (born in Ohio, about 1850)
Alice Thompson 5 (born in Ohio, about 1855)
Bert Thompson 3 (born in Ohio, about 1857)

Below is a possible timeline for how this family came to be living together. Note that all relations are assumed.

Cornelia married Mr. Freeby, before 1841.
Cornelia (20) had a daughter: Eliz /Freeby/, 1834, Connecticut.
Cornelia (30) had a son: Jos Freeby, 1841, Illinois.
Cornelia (33) had a son: Peter Freeby, 1844, Illinois.*

Cornelia married Mr. Miller, before 1850.
Cornelia (36) had a daughter, Harriet Miller, 1850, Ohio.

Eliz /Freeby/ married Mr. Thompson, before 1855.
Eliz (21) had a daughter, Alice Thompson, 1855, Ohio.
Eliz (23) had a son, Bert Thompson, 1857, Ohio.

* Peter in 1880 claimed on the US Federal Census that his mother was born in Massachusetts. It's possible they were half-brothers, both living with Jos's mother, Cornelia. Also, Joseph C. Freeby had put his mother's birthplace as Pennsylvania for a census or two, then in a later census put it as New York, so it's possible the two were uncertain of their mother's actual birthplace.

=> 1870

Joseph C. lived in Franklin, Portage, Ohio. He lived with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Freeby, and their daughter, Harriet Freeby. Note that there was a Harriet Miller where Jos and Peter lived ten years earlier.

Cornelia Miller continued to live in Cuyahoga Falls, Summit, Ohio:
Name Age
Cornelia Miller 55 (born in New York, about 1815)
Henry A Thompson 13 (born in Pennsylvania, about 1857)

Note that Cornelia lived in 1860 with a Bert Thompson born about 1857. Here, she lived with a Henry A. Thompson who was born about 1857. It's possible Bert and Henry are the same person, but their names and birthplaces are different. Henry may be a step-son, but where is Bert? Did he not live until age 13?

As a side-note, in 1900, a 44-year-old Henry Thompson, born in February, 1856 in Pennsylvania, and whose mother and father were both born in Pennsylvania, was a boarder in a home in Perry, Fayette, Pennsylvania. This may be a different Henry Thompson.

As a side-note, in 1920, a 64-year-old Henry Thompson, born about 1856 in Pennsylvania, and whose mother and father were both born in Pennsylvania, was a boarder in a different home in Perry, Fayette, Pennsylvania. This may be a different Henry Thompson.

=> 1880

Joseph C. continued to live in Franklin, Portage, Ohio. He lived with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Freeby, and his kids, Cornelia and Joseph Freeby. Note that there was a Cornelia where Jos and Peter had lived.

Peter continued to live in Cuyahoga Falls, Summit, Ohio:
Name Age
Peter Freeby 36
Joanna Freeby 32
John Freeby 13
Hattie Freeby 11
Morden P. Freeby 9
Nellie Freeby 7
Julia Freeby 5
Bessie Freeby 8m

=> 1890

Joseph C. had moved to Long Beach, Los Angeles, California. He lived with his wife, Mary Elizabeth, their daughter Mary Freeby (and her daughter Margeret Elizabeth Fessenden), and their other daugther, Louise Alice Freeby. Note that there was an Alice Thompson where Jos and Peter had lived.
